* all workshops are 75 minutes in length, unless mentioned otherwise.

Jazz route

This route is for everyone who wants to specifically learn as much as possible about jazz harp this weekend. Jazz harp first timers and those who might have had a single workshop on jazz will feel comfortable here, while those who enjoyed more extensive jazz (harp) learnings before are invited to join our Intensive Course

Jazz Harp Basics level 1 (Saturday 10:00)

- details & booking

A basic jazz harp workshop taught by Carina Backhuijs, the first harpist in The Netherlands with an actual Bachelor degree in Jazz Harp. The 10 o'clock workshop will be geared towards jazz harp first timers who do have a bit of proficiency on their instrument already, but have little knowledge of chords and improvisation.

Jazz Harp Basics level 2 (Saturday 11:30)

- details & booking

A faster paced version of the 'Jazz Harp Basics 1' workshop, also taught by Carina Backhuijs, who is the first harpist in The Netherlands with a Bachelor degree in Jazz Harp. For harp players with some knowledge of chords, and possibly already some experience in jazz harp and playing from chord charts.

Park's Pink Panther (Saturday 14:00)

- details & booking

Park Stickney will guide you, in all his genius wit and enthusiasm, to make your own version of the Pink Panther theme, on your own level. He will be sharing useful tools and tricks as you go along. This fun workshop might involve ensemble, improvisation, and of course lots of slides!

Kurt's Gramophone (Saturday 15:45u & Sunday10:00u)

The ever popular and hugely inspirational jazz listening session with Kurt Schwab. For all music lovers. A must if you want to play jazz, a treat if you're just a hungry listener.

How to survive a jam session crash course (Sunday, 16:45, 60 minutes)

- free, reservations appreciated

An initiation in jam session playing for all instrumentalists and singers. With the use of a very simple chord progression and the help of a swinging rhythm section. Band leader and saxophone-player-with-harp-knowledge Kurt Schwab will teach you all the do's and don'ts of jazz sessions.

Improv route

This route covers improvisation in 4 different genres. You could just pick one that you feel familiar with, but how about a creative journey exploring the concept of improvisation, finding the distinctions as well as kinship between the genres?

Free Improv (Saturday 10:00)

- details & booking

A good start of a creative day, awakening the senses and opening your mind. Imagine you're Alice Coltrane today (or John, in case you choose to bring your sax). If you are able to produce the sounds and the notes that you want to hear on your instrument you are ready to start learning about improvisation in its freeest form.

Folk Improv (Saturday 11:30)

- details & booking

Folk harpist, composer and cross-genre performer Savourna Stevenson will be teaching this workshop based on folk music from various parts of the world. Improvisation learnings will go hand in hand with instruction on form and characteristics of several kinds of folk music. Also, Savourna will touch upon extended techniques that enable you to better perform these characteristics.

Baroque Improv (Saturday 14:00)

- details & booking

Constance Allanic will guide you on 17th C. improvisation. The riffs of Rembrandt and Buxtehude's time had beautiful names, such as Romanesca and Folia, and you can learn how to improvise on them, following baroque patterns.

Make sure you know your triads and inversions (ask your teacher to help refresh your memory!), and get in the mood by listening to eg. Corelli's Follia variations (on youtube).

Kurt's Gramophone (Saturday 15:45u & Sunday10:00u)

- free, reservations appreciated

- reserve Saturday

- reserve Sunday

This is also part of the jazz curriculum and the 'All Musicians route'. It's not an active playing workshop, but if you are prepared to be an active listener, you will get a good taste of jazz improvisation. Kurt's enthusiasm will inspire you, and he will send you home with a good bunch of suggestions to dive deeper if you want to.

Kids route

Jazz4Kids (Saturday, 10:00)

- details & booking

- geared to ages 5-8

Tom Verburg from Jazz4Kids will show children what it is that makes jazz music so special: their own contribution, and improvisation! They will be making up their own music on the instruments, with bodysounds, or their voices in no time. They will learn jazz songs, clap jazz rhythms, and improvise! Come and swing along!

Creativity is key in this workshop. The level is not important, and it doesn't matter whether or not the children play an instrument (although there will of course be at least 1 little harp present;). Anyone can join.

Schrijf een popliedje - Write a pop song (Saturday 11:30, Sunday 12:00)

- details & booking Saturday

- details & booking Sunday

Habiba and the children had such a great time writing a song text together and making a song out of it at the Jazz Harp Academy in 2013, that a repeat cannot stay out! Harp pupils as well as other instrumentalists and singers of any level can join, create and play!

De Dikke & De Dunne (Saturday 14:00)

- details & booking

- for children of all ages

Sabien Canton will teach a swinging workshop based on the piece 'De Dikke & De Dunne' from her well-known harp method 'Harpology'. It will involve ensemble playing (with parts at many levels of harp playing, and limited non-harp parts available as well). You'll be swinging and grooving in no time!

Body Percussion (Saturday 15:45)

- free, reservation appreciated

This is actually an all-ages workshop, but loads of fun for children as well.

The Indonesian Saman, Ethiopian Armpit Music, the Palmas in Flamenco, the Hambone, an African-American plantation dance from the US, all these folk traditions in music use body percussion. And now we are stomping, patching, clapping, snapping with the only instrument that everyone possesses. The human body gives you a direct experience of musical elements, such as beat, rhythm, and metre and helps you internalise rhythmic skills. Discover how the human body can make the most enchanting rhythms possible! Open to everyone, with or without any music education.

Pop & Rock route

Singer-songwriting (Saturday, 10:00)

- details & booking

Back by popular demand. Habiba will share the ins & outs of songwriting, while you are enjoying an on-the-spot creative process together. It comes in handy if you are acquainted with major and minor triads. Do ask any questions you may have, about hurdles you experience while writing yourself, or just about where to start. Both harp players and other instrumentalists are welcome..

Rock harp (Saturday, 14:00)

- details & booking

We don't often encounter a true rock musician with a harp. Lena Woods starred on The Voice in France, and is playing big stages with her rock band Nobody's Cult. Let her introduce you to the role of the harp in rock music. She will show you her use of effect pedals, talk about how to define your role as a harp player in a rock band, and you will get to play typical harp parts and accompaniments.

Laura Perrudin (Saturday, 15:45)

- details & booking

Laura is quite an eclectic musician. Brought up on a diet of jazz from childhood, her classical music studies led on to both electronic and traditional music, via soul and hip-hop, through her encounters with innumerable musicians, in her native Brittany, but also in Paris and New York. What are genre boundaries for anyway... just get inspired!

All musiciens route

Rémy's Road (Saturday 10:00)

- free, reservations appreciated

How did Remy van Kesteren turn his initially 'traditionally classical' harpist career into an incredibly adventurous (and succesful) one? Aside from his personality and beliefs, a chain of events led him to where he is now. Be a 'studio guest' in this multimedia interview about the road behind him, and lying ahead. We take questions, which you can send ahead of time to info@jazzharp.org (please write 'Remy's Road' in the subject line).

The Classical Musician's Jazz Workshop (Saturday 11:30 and 14:00)

- details & booking

*double workshop of 2 x 75 min for all instrumentalists

Might this be you?: You can play very difficult etudes and virtuoso concert pieces, but if they would ask you to solo over chords, or improvise, you wouldn't really know what to do.

Kurt wants to show you, using such etudes and concert pieces, that improvisation and soloing over chords is just around the corner for every classically trained musician.

Participants are asked to submit a favorite etude ahead of time. Several of these submissions will be used during the workshop to work on chords, improvisation, typical differences in phrasing, etc.

Kurt's Gramophone (Saturday 15:45u & Sunday10:00u)

- free, reservations appreciated

- reserve Saturday

- reserve Sunday

Hugely inspirational jazz listening session with Kurt Schwab. For all music lovers. A must if you want to play jazz, a treat if you're just a hungry listener.
